How PDF to Text works

Extracts selectable text from chosen PDF pages locally and formats it with page separators for copying or download.

Try an example

Extract pages 1,3-5 from a report into a text file for search or reuse.

Good to know

Local processing. Maximum 50 MB per input, 100 MB total, 20 files and 2,000 total pages. Encrypted or malformed PDFs are rejected. This reads an existing PDF text layer; it does not perform OCR, so scanned or image-only pages may be empty. Reading order follows PDF text items and may not match the visual layout. Up to 25 MB, 100 pages and 1,000,000 extracted characters.

Your privacy

Processing happens on this device for this tool. We do not upload your input, put it in share links or save it to your favourites. Closing this tab discards the working input; downloaded results remain wherever you save them.

When this tool is useful

Use PDF to Text when the document already contains selectable text and you need a copyable extract for search, notes or reuse.

How to use it

  1. Choose the PDF and optionally enter page numbers or ranges such as 1,3-5.
  2. Run extraction and read the page separators and output before copying.
  3. Download the plain-text file if you need to keep the extract alongside the original.

Checks before you rely on the result

  • This reads the existing text layer; it does not perform OCR on a scan.
  • PDF reading order can differ from the visual layout, especially in multi-column documents.
  • Password-protected, malformed, oversized and very large-text inputs are rejected before export.

This page is maintained with the tool implementation and its deterministic tests. If the result looks wrong, report the issue with a non-sensitive example.
