Image Resizer: instructions, examples and limits

Resamples pixels to a target width and height.

What it does

Resamples pixels to a target width and height. Lock the aspect ratio to preserve proportions.

Resize is the right choice when a service asks for particular pixel dimensions or when an image is needlessly large for its display size.

How to use it

  1. 1

Choose the image and enter the target width or height.

  2. 2

Keep the aspect-ratio lock on unless you intentionally need a stretched canvas.

  3. 3

Review the new dimensions and download the result in a format suited to its destination.

Worked example

1920 × 1080 resized to 960 × 540 retains a 16:9 aspect ratio.

The example demonstrates the operation. For file-based tools, results depend on the selected file and options.

How the result is produced

Resamples pixels to a target width and height. Lock the aspect ratio to preserve proportions.

Important limits

Upscaling cannot recover missing detail. JPG, PNG, WebP and browser-decodable AVIF inputs (named converters require their stated source format); 25 MB and 24 megapixels maximum. Output is a single still frame; animation, source colour profiles and metadata are not preserved.

Checks before sharing or relying on the result

  • Upscaling creates larger pixels but cannot recover detail that was not captured.
  • Cropping and resizing solve different problems; crop first when the composition is wrong.
  • The browser works on a decoded copy and leaves the original untouched.

Choosing the next step

Use Resize when the dimensions are the problem, Compress when the bytes are the problem, and Metadata Remover when the file contains information you do not want to distribute. Format conversion is a separate choice: JPG is usually compact for photos, PNG keeps transparency, and WebP can be a useful modern compromise.
